Woody Allen’s Love Letter to Barcelona

You don’t even have to know the name of it, you can just say: ‘I’m going to the new Woody Allen movie’.

Actors join the cast with no script because it’s a Woody Allen movie. He defines the word auteur; he’s the creative force behind all of his films. He writes them. He directs them. His films reflect his personality, his anxieties and insights. He’s the actor who made being neurotic an attractive quality. He has fans who love his early comedies and fans of his later, perhaps more sophisticated work.

Woody Allen’s large body of work and cerebral film style, mixing satire, wit and humor, have made him one of the most respected and prolific filmmakers in the modern era. He is not your typical Hollywood film director; in fact, he is sort of an anti-Hollywood film director. He has to my knowledge never directed a film in Hollywood or for a Hollywood studio.

Woody Allen is a NYC neurotic. He films in New York. Well, until recently that is.

Woody Allen’s last two movies, ‘Match Point’ and ‘Scoop’, were filmed on location in London, UK. And his next one, his current production, is being filmed right now in Barcelona. Yes.

‘Midnight in Barcelona’ was introduced to the press and the world last Monday at a sweltering press conference which Woody Allen gave in Barcelona with a phalanx of security guards in attendance.

“I hope I can present Barcelona to the world as I see it, the same way I presented Manhattan to the world as I saw it with my eyes” Allen said, dressed in a natty fly-fisherman hat, as he unveiled a few more details about his next movie, which he will shoot in Spain from next Monday, 9 July.

“I want to write a love letter to Barcelona and from Barcelona to the world” he added, as much perhaps by way of clarification as diplomacy.

That affection is returned by Barcelona and Spain at large.

Scarlett Johansson will have the female lead role again as she already did in the last two Woody Allen movies, whilst Spanish actors Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz are co-starring.

I am a self-confessed Woody Allen devotee. Not so sure about Scarlett Johansson. Make of that whatever you want.
